Storytelling Coaching with Daniel Allison

So you’ve taken a look at the Roundhouse. You can see that it’s easily the most comprehensive storytelling training package available, and incredibly good value too. But you might be thinking…

I need more.

Perhaps you struggle with public speaking and could do with extra encouragement and group support on your journey.

Perhaps you just know that storytelling is your path. You want to get as good as you possibly can, as fast as you possibly can.

Perhaps you want to explore both how to tell stories and how to explore the deeper layers of stories.

Perhaps you struggle with self-directed learning and you need to work directly with a teacher to stay motivated.

Does this sound like you?

If so, I have a solution for you. There’s a way for you to get all the benefits of Roundhouse membership PLUS regular coaching sessions with me and a small group of apprentices.

Myth Singers

Storytelling Apprenticeship Program

The Beginner's Course

My Year 1 Coaching Program is designed to take you from the very beginning of your journey to the point where you can comfortably entertain an audience with an hour-long set of stories.

Along the way, we’ll cover the fundamentals of storytelling, study some prominent traditions and explore both the art of telling and the hidden depths within the stories we tell.

You will:

  • learn a new story each month
  • acquire a solid foundational understanding of several prominent folklore traditions
  • receive two 1-2-1 coaching sessions
  • get to know your own tastes and storytelling style
  • learn techniques for telling to both adults and children
  • gain the confidence to do your own research into myth & folklore
  • steadily grow in confidence as the course progresses
  • get to know the archetypes that live within stories and how they show up in your own life
  • enjoy access to Roundhouse events including monthly story shares and webinars
  • stay in close contact with your group and support one another
  • experience the joy of watching your course-mates progress alongside you!

The Program

On this course we will explore the following modules:

  • Connecting to Stories
  • Storytelling Fundamentals
  • Archetypes & Story Modes
  • African Animal Tales
  • Celtic Folk Tales
  • Greek Myths
  • Norse Myths
  • Group Shows
  • Solo Shows

The stories we study will gradually build in complexity as the year progresses.

This structure is flexible; you are free to divert from the syllabus at times if other stories are speaking to you.

How it Works

We meet on Zoom twice per month. Meetings last 2-2.5 hrs. Some sessions will focus on storytelling skills, while others will focus on your personal relationship with the story you are working with.

The course lasts for 12 months, from 1st May 2022 until 1st May 2023.

Meeting times tbc.

During the final 2 months, the group will put together an online storytelling event in which you will all tell a story to finish off the year and celebrate all the work!

You will also receive guidance during this time on putting together your own event. This could be in person or online; it could be ticketed or you could just invite a few close friends round for an evening of stories at your home. There’s no pressure. You only need do this if you feel ready… but I’ll make sure you have the skills to do so!

A 1-2-1 coaching session to help prepare for the solo event (and another at the halfway point) are included in the course package.

‘You really are the best coach ever, I can't even begin to tell you what an amazing, transformational year this has been and what the coaching has meant to me. Every single session has been such a joy and I'm so, so very grateful that you decided to share your wisdom with us. Thank you for launching Myth Singers, for being so unbelieveably supportive, for passing the torch and for helping me to look beyond the veil. I can't wait to see what year two will bring!’

Storytelling Apprenticeship Program

Year 2

(closed for applicants until 14th February 2022)

Year II: From Irish Myth to Email Marketing

Students who have already taken my beginner’s course, or have equivalent experience, are eligible to take my advanced course.

This course is for individuals who have a strong foundation in storytelling technique. You will be confident in researching, developing and telling stories and ready to go further.

What Does Year II cover?

The advanced course is all about:

  • profoundly deepening your connection to the stories that call you
  • gaining a sound understanding of how storytelling is practiced in the world today
  • becoming proficient in researching, exploring and telling challenging stories
  • learning how to create, host, manage and promote storytelling events
  • (for those that desire it) developing your professional storytelling career
  • exploring powerful initiatory stories such as The Bear Husband, Prince Lindworm, The Snake Shirt, The Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi and The Hunter's Tears

Many of the coaching sessions in the advanced course are student-led. Students will learn how to facilitate workshops exploring the social and spiritual resonances of the stories that interest them, and take turns to offer sessions exploring stories of their choice.

I will teach active imagination techniques so that we can engage at the deepest level with each story we explore.

Beyond a certain point, storytelling is no longer about voice, movement and participation. It’s about your relationship to your story, your audience and yourself. This is the territory we’ll be exploring on the advanced course. We’ll enter in a spirit of open enquiry, with the intention of learning as much as we can while acknowledging that we can never grasp everything a story has to offer.

How it Works

We will meet on Zoom twice per month, times tbc.

The course lasts for 12 months, from 1st May to 1st May (Beltane to Beltane). Registration for the 2022 course will open on 14th February 2022.

We will study 10 modules over 10 months. The final months will be spent preparing for an online group performance and individual events.

Your individual event can be a workshop or performance: the only requirement is that your event is an ambitious project that will stretch you. I’ll provide guidance on your subject and supervise your preparation.
